數年前,富永淳失去了右眼的視力。被醫生診斷出眼內長了腫瘤,可以選擇暫保視力,但腫瘤有機會惡化成癌,又或是動手術防止病變,但會失去視力。他選擇了後者。那陣子正是他籌備開設古道具店的日子,他常開玩笑說,失去了一隻眼睛,老天送回他另一隻,而且是天眼,能把萬事萬物看得更清更細。

他的古道具店名字簡單直接,就叫古道具,位於京都等持寺車站的附近,只在周六開放,因他周一至五還得上班,周日則是家庭日。店舖的所在其實是他的老家,原本破破舊舊的,住了他與妻兒,五年前決定進行大改裝,他趁機劃出店舖空間,或者說,他的妻子促他劃出店舖空間。

約在十年前吧,我認識了在丹波的陶藝家石井直人先生。造陶的人,大多都喜歡古道具的。我初到訪他家時,還對古道具一無所知,但親身將之應用在生活裡後,便發現尋常的家居氣氛立時改變了,有種⋯⋯心如鹿撞的感覺。 我想把那心如鹿撞的感覺,再往外推出一點,再推出一點,結果原本用來放陶藝及古道具的櫃子便不夠空間了。越買越多,妻子看不下去,富永淳靈機 一觸,說自己將來要開古道具店,想不到妻子認真看待,抓著家裡裝修的機會,要他實踐夢想

法國藝術家Johanna Tagada利用鏡頭、畫筆和一雙手,捕捉目光所及的微小事物,將之融合美麗想像,幻化為溫柔的個人生活圖像。

母雞排隊拍拍照、貓兒手牽手去採草莓、驢子在跟貓玩皮球並約好天晴時一起暢泳去⋯⋯Nachio Nakanishi畫筆下的世界,是一個由動物組織而成的世界,裡面沒有紛爭怨懟,只有各種各樣的生活瑣事。豆芽菜炒拉麵、烤洋葱與紅菜頭的沙拉醬汁拌一拌、豆腐之上擱上大堆的豆子大堆的葱,Nachio Nakanishi的料理,大剌剌的,豪邁的擺盤卻有著細緻的味道。她的畫與料理,關係理不清,但同時編織出溫暖動人的生活風景。

明天晚上虎紋貓Bon Bon要來煮飯啊,你們要來吃嗎?每隔幾個月,就會收到不同經營藝廊的朋友的短訊。虎紋貓Bon Bon就是Nachio Nakanishi,她有一家旅行餐廳,沒有固定的經營地點,直接走到人家的廚房開火燒鍋,煮菜的當天才在當地菜市場購買當地的食材。對我們來說,去吃虎紋貓Bon Bon做的飯,不只等於我們將吃到美味的料理,還暗示了我們有一場氣氛很不錯的聚會,跟朋友、料理、做料理的人的聚會。

4. THE STATE THAT I AM IN / WALLIS, A BEAUTIFUL STORE

不斷丟去,不斷撿拾。不斷推散自己。

像拋球一樣,下次拋出去的時候會順一點嗎?又或者, 原來是人太習慣下定義了。當A Beautiful Store在大埔開店的時候,那隱居在山林間,旁邊是幾層樓高錯落有緻地散落的村屋民居,再走過一段蜿蜒小道,空氣裡會飄著草青或雨後潮濕的野生氣味,那時候會在本地開在山野的生活器物店也沒現在普遍。我們大概以為Wallis會一直那樣走下去吧。然而大埔店維持了兩年多,在第一年完結的時候她已經感到不行了,別人覺得很暢順又美好但她只覺不斷重複,要掙脫了。之後她把店搬到太子花墟,空間大了,想展現的畫面又更遼闊了。

當你不斷打開自己的時候,會發覺自己還可以不斷打開的。不同階段的你會怎樣去理解那些事,你會不斷去推翻自己,那種感覺好妙。

5. CRAFT AS CONVERSATIONS / WITH HOME, SPACE AND MORE

創作是一場對話和探索過程。

工藝(Craft),之於創作者可以有許多不同的詮釋;然而,重要不只是「工」,而是創作者注入的好奇和投入。近年「設計」成為了創新產業的關鍵詞,急功近利、商業行銷主導,令家具、物件和設計思維淪為口號或粗製濫造的製成品。不過,還有設計師和品牌依然相信,人與物件之間擁有更多值得發掘的新故事,進行對話的可能性,當意念變成創作動力,將「家」變成「特別的創作場所」,甚至以工藝和研發物料想像未來社會。以下是來自斯德哥爾摩二人首飾設計師Nicolas ChengBeatrice Brovia、荷蘭設計創意聯展團體Dutch Invertuals和丹麥生活品牌Frama的分享。

This Spring & Summer 2018 edition gently takes our readers’ hands and guides them to take a delicate look on their everyday life with craft. It is as if travelling with your imagination, you will learn to appreciate both the ordinary and the extraordinary home scenery.

“I think, the so-called life is, even if you don’t go anywhere, you have already travelled thousands of miles. At home, while we are pondering over trivial things and constantly experimenting, we are also starting a small journey. We think about how to transform a tiny kitchen, so as to turn household chores into pleasant work; we think about what kind of dishes to make for dinner, or when we have nothing else to do, we sit in a chair and stare out at the courtyard. All these can be counted as various trips. Just as travelling is about seeking your true self, these daily experiences are also working on shaping it. Taking a journey is not only about going to a faraway and unknown place. When you stay at your most familiar home, it’s also a kind of travelling.” —— Ryuji Mitani

1. THE CLUTTERED SCENERY / JUN TOMINAGA’S FURUI DOUGU(富永淳)

A few years ago, Jun Tominaga lost the sight of his right eye. The doctor diagnosed it with a tumor in his eye. He then had to struggle between two options — to keep his eyesight, but taking the risk of letting the tumor develop into cancer; or to have an operation to remove the tumor, which in turn would as well take away his eyesight. He chose the latter option. That was the time when he was planning the grand opening of his secondhand store. He often jokingly says, since he had lost one eye, the god gave him new wisdom as a gift to allow him seeing everything more thoroughly.

His shop is aptly named Furui Dougu, which literally means “secondhand goods”. The shop is located near Tōji-in station, Kyoto. Since Tominaga needs to work during the week for his full-time job, and Sunday is the family day, the shop only opens on Saturday. Furui Dougu was in fact located in his family house where he lives with his wife and son. Five years ago, the Tominagas decided to have a thorough renovation for the rather shabby house, so Tominaga seized the chance to arrange some space for his shop. Or, perhaps we should say his wife urged him to arrange a space for his shop.

“It was around ten years ago when I first met Naoto Ishii, the potter from Tanba-shi. Most of the potters are fond of old things. When I first visited his place, I knew nothing about secondhand items. However, when I actually started using them in my everyday life, I realized they make such a big difference to the atmosphere of my home. I felt so intrigued. Guided by this captivating feeling, I expanded my collection until my cupboard no longer had enough space for my pottery and secondhand items.” Mrs. Tominaga began to complain about the increasing amount of secondhand items that he bought, he therefore wittily told her his plan was to have his own secondhand store. To his surprise, his wife took his words seriously. When they were renovating the house, she tried to get him to fulfill his “dream”.

2. THE SHAPES THAT WEAVE LIFE TOGETHER / JOHANNA TAGADA

French artist Johanna Tagada uses her hands, camera lens and drawing pens to collect the small things she observes in her daily life. Together with her beautiful imaginations, she has created a series of images, weaving the shapes of life.

3. COOK WHAT YOU LOVE, DRAW WHAT YOU LOVE / NACHIO NAKANISHI(中西直子)

The hens are queuing up for photo shooting; hand in hand, the cats are picking up strawberries; the donkey is playing ball with the cat, they even promised to go swimming together when the weather is nice. In the world illustrated by Nachio Nakanishi, there are only animals. With no quarrel or grievance, their world is simply filled with every day trivial. Fried noodles with bean sprout, baked onion with beetroot dressing, tofu topped with beans and lots of chives. The dishes prepared by Nakanishi are never pretentious, they are presented in a straightforward yet delicate way. Her dishes are intertwined with her drawings, together, they weaved a tender and heart-warming scenery of everyday life.

“The Tabby Cat Bon Bon will be cooking dinner at ours tomorrow, are you coming?” Curators from different galleries would send me similar messages once every few months. The Tabby Cat Bon Bon is in fact Nachio Nakanishi, who has a mobile restaurant, which, basically means she would invite herself to cook at friends’ place spontaneously using ingredients that she buys at the local market on the day of the dinner party. To us, Tabby Cat Bon Bon’s dinner party means more than just delicious food; it is also equivalent to lovely gatherings with friends, delicacies and the chef herself.

4. THE STATE THAT I AM IN / WALLIS, A BEAUTIFUL STORE

Throw it away and pick it up back again.

“Like throwing a ball, will the projectile be smoother next time?” Or perhaps, people are simply too used to coming to a quick conclusion. A Beautiful Store was first opened in Tai Po, an area in the New Territories of Hong Kong. The shop was hidden in the mountain, surrounded by village houses of around 3 stories high. Walking on the meandering path, you would smell the typical grassy and humid scent of country air, most possibly due to the rain. Back in the days, it was not yet as popular a trend to set up a homeware shop in local villages as today. We thought Wallis would stay and station her business in that shop. Yet, the shop in Tai Po was closed after two years; in fact, Wallis was already exhausted after the first year of business. While outsiders see her life smooth and enviable, she felt trapped by the repetitiveness. Driven by the urge to escape, she moved her shop to the Prince Edward flower market. With a more spacious shop, she began to come up with a grander picture to communicate to the world.

“When you peel off the outer layer of yourself, you will realize there are actually many more layers to come. At different stages you would have different ways to comprehend things and you will keep correcting yourself. That is a wonderful feeling.”

5. CRAFT AS CONVERSATIONS / WITH HOME, SPACE AND MORE

Creativity is a process of dialogue and exploration.

To creators, craftsmanship can be interpreted in many different ways. One thing that always holds true is that, craftsmanship is more than merely the technique. The curiosity and dedication the creator pours into his work are admittedly the most important qualities. In recent years, “design” has become an easy buzzword for the creative industry. In this profit-driven and highly commercialized society, the concept of product design is often diminished to mere catchphrase for crudely made products. Despite this trend, some designers and brands insist to believe in the stories between human and objects, and continue to explore the possibility for dialogue. They turn conceptual ideas into motivation to create, they turn “home” into “a special workshop for creativity”, they even go an extra mile to envision the future with crafts and innovative materials. Here, we have brought to you some inspiring stories from the Stockholm jewellery duo Nicolas Cheng and Beatrice Brovia, an experimental Dutch designers' collective — Dutch Invertuals, and the Danish lifestyle design studio/brand Frama.
