梨木製陶所為Obscura製作的高台杯系列面世了!經過多個月的反覆試驗,最後完成了四款各有特色和美態的高台杯,包括有銀彩白化妝高台杯、蝕鐵彩高台杯、銀鐵彩高台杯和銀鐵彩花型高台杯,讓我們重新感受手造器物的美好。

「我們已很久沒做過高台杯了,最困難的部分是在燒製過程中,泥土會變軟,杯腳很容易變形或彎曲,所以燒製上需要一定的技巧,而修坯時也要確保杯腳很幼但不會折斷,同樣是很有難度的。」梨木製陶所的主理人Ryan說。「我們製作器物時會刻意地做輕身一點,因為拿起來使用的器物若太重會讓人感到不舒適。加上這系列的外表像鐵般的重,捧在手心上卻是意想不到輕,這也是我們想予人感受到的有趣對比。」

白化妝系列的底層塗上了數層陶漿,能透出不同層次的泥,體現粗糙的泥土觸感,與優雅的外表形成對比。另外,杯內的銀彩是在釉上再添加銀色釉,以純銀來表現閃亮的質感,使用時會隨時間而氧化,留下使用的痕跡。

除了梨木製陶所這幾年一直發展的花型系列外,這次重點推介蝕鐵彩高台杯系列,帶點崩爛的細節和銹蝕效果像經歷了時間的洗練,猶如博物館裡的青銅器物。這些細節以往多使用在種植的盆器之上,這次卻大膽地嘗試於細小的日常器物上體現,呈現另一種美感。此外,杯身使用了鐵彩的釉藥,模仿鐵的質感,在燈光下能看到閃爍的金色。

高台杯給人的感覺大多是西方盛載酒的器物,Ryan卻想把它放在中國的茶文化裡。「現代美學融合了各種文化,尤其在香港,匯集不同地方的文化,所以我希望這系列能像縮小了的酒杯,也能當它是茶杯使用,讓大眾擴闊對器物的想像。」這些高台杯除了可以作為茶、酒、食物的盛器,也可以作為花器,又或是純粹地作為觀賞,能隨使用者的心意而轉換用途。

「我希望我們做出來的器物能陪伴使用的人一輩子。每天都自由地使用它們,不需要小心翼翼、生怕打破。透過使用,陶器會產生變化,每一天都是新的相處、新的接觸,與它們一起成長。」另一位主理人Wy在早前的訪問中說到,透過使用,我們與器物連結起來,並能感受生活裡每一刻既微小又實在的美好。

The goblet series produced by Toki Nashiki for Obscura is finally here! After months of trial and error, four unique goblets in distinctive shapes and colors, including silver-white, dark-metal, and metallic silver-iron, are now ready for you to take home. Let us once again embrace the beauty of handmade utensils.

“It’s been a really long time since we’ve made goblets. The most difficult part in making them is that during the firing process, the clay becomes much softer and the cup feet can deform or go crooked. That’s why we needed to be skillful in that. Because the cup feet are so thin, we have to be really careful when fettling to avoid breaking them,” said Ryan, one of the masterminds behind Toki Nashiki. “We purposely make our utensils lighter in weight because it’s quite uncomfortable to hold something too heavy. In addition, while the iron-like appearance makes the cups look heavy, we want to create this interesting contradiction in which when people pick up the cups, they will find them unexpectedly lightweight.”

The goblet in silver-white is coated with several layers of white clay coating. It has an elegant shape that is in contradiction to its rough and earthy texture. On the inside of the cup, an extra layer of silver glaze is painted on top of the normal glaze to produce a shiny, silvery texture. Over time, the oxidation process will leave traces of use on the cup.

In addition to the flower-shaped utensils which have been a constant feature at Toki Nashiki in recent years, the goblet series also includes a dark-metal design that resembles an aged bronze cup with a dented edge and rusted surface exhibited in the museum. Its delicate details, which were most often used on large planting pots in the past, embody a form of beauty that is unique to small utensils. With a body coated with iron glaze, the cup has a lustrous outward appearance that shimmers under the light.

While goblets are widely used to serve wine in the West, Ryan wants to make them a part of Chinese tea culture. “Modern aesthetics is a fusion of various cultures; especially in Hong Kong, we bring together cultures from different places. I hope that people can use these goblets like small wine glasses. They can also use them to serve sake and tea. We hope to broaden peoples’ imagination of what vessels can be.” In addition to being used as tea, wine, sake and food containers, these goblets can also be used as a vase, or simply an art piece for admiration; all up to the users’ preference.

“I hope the vessels we created can spend their life with their users. The users can use them freely, without having to worry that they might break them. Pottery changes over time when in use. Every day is a new start, a new connection. We’d love to see that the pottery grows together with their users,” Wy, the other half of the founding duo of Toki Nashiki, said in another interview earlier on.
